Over 43 millions of Americans are experiencing foot pain. It is one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctors. Mostly, this is due to the kind of shoes people use. However, there are also instances when foot pain is also an indication of a more serious health problem. This is what people should be able to clearly identify. After all, anyone who experiences a serious foot pain is close to the possibility of not being able to report to work, therefore affecting his way of earning. This is why some people seek for medical attention hoping to get diagnosis and proper medication.

There are several associations of foot pain to health.

  1. Obesity- A survey of the American Foot and Ankle Society shows link of obesity to foot pain. As a person increases his weight, he has a greater tendency to experience foot pain. Foot and ankle pain are generally experienced because of bearing the weight of our body.
  2. Diabetes- There are about 24 millions of Americans who have diabetes. Foot problems are common among them. As glucose or blood sugar builds up on the blood, the excess sugar may affect nerves and blood vessels in the feet. This situation makes diabetic patients numb to any kind of pain. There are times their feet get wounded but they do not feel any pain at all. As a result, some of them end up having their entire foot amputated because of infection.
  3. Peripheral Artery Disease- This results to poor blood circulation because of the contraction of veins in the leg. When this happens, there is also a possibility of blood not to properly circulate to the heart and other body organs. One of the contributors for the contraction of the veins is smoking.
  4. Rheumatoid Arthritis- There are instances when the body’s immune system attacks joint by mistake. At times this causes the foot to be unbearably painful and swollen. It is one of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Some people even notice changes in the appearance of their toes and feet. But there are medical procedures available to treat this kind of condition.
  5. Gouts- This is another type of arthritis. It takes place whenever uric acid accumulates in the body and particularly settles in our big toes. It also results to an excessive pain. There are medicines available to treat gouts. For this, doctors also recommend regular exercise, intake of plenty of water and diet.

There are minor foot pains which can be remedied by shifting to a more comfortable foot wear.

Podiatrists always advise to choose comfort over style and fashion. A person must choose the right shoe style which could best suit the figure of his feet. It is understandable that people wear trendy shoes but it should be limited. Poor shoe choices can cause bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes and other significant foot issues. When you do the right things in terms of caring for your feet and when you understand how to deal with certain foot pains, you are also eliminating the chances of you suffering from more serious foot conditions in the future.
