Here are four effective abdominal exercises that you can do, some at the gym and some that can be done from home.</p>
<p>One of the most effective abdominal exercises that can be done is the simple crunch. The fact that there are many variations on this theme is very important for you to understand, as it is possible for you to hit different muscles in the abdominal region by adjusting the crunching that you are going. At its very basic level, you will be lying on your back on the floor and lifting the neck and upper back off of the floor in order to flex the abdominal muscles. Consider it like doing a partial sit up. It is much easier on the back than doing a full sit up and it is easy to target the abdominals by doing so.</p>
<p>A second type of exercise which really works on the abdominal muscles is a variation on the crunch. This is typically done with a machine and you can add additional resistance in order to make these abdominal exercises more difficult. Some of the machines will have you lying on your back, perhaps even in a reclined position with your feet hooked under bars. You would then crunch your abdominals, much in the same way that you would do it if you&#8217;re lying on the floor. There are also abdominal exercises which can be done with you in a seated position by pressing weight forward and crunching the abdominals in this way.</p>
<p>The bicycle is another very effective exercise that can be done which works the abdominals. These abdominal exercises are done with you lying on your back and with your neck and upper back off of the floor. You would lift your knees up until they were at a ninety degree angle to your hips and then you would pull one of your knees back to the opposing elbow and then straighten the leg out. This is a move that would then be repeated with the other knee and continue to do so for a set number of repetitions.</p>
<p>One of the other abdominal exercises that is often overlooked is the stomach vacuum. This one can be done in any area, even whenever you&#8217;re standing in line at the grocery store. Simply stuck in your stomach as hard as you possibly can, trying to touch your belly button to your spine. Do this for 30 to 60 seconds and then release it, resting for an equal amount of time. Repeat it as many times as you like and you will notice that your waistline is shrinking rapidly.</p>

<p>Before anything else, let me emphasize that proper diet is also crucial in building six pack abs. That’s because your body needs the nutrition to recover from your strenuous workouts. That&#8217;s why you must start following a healthy diet. Try to eat good carbs, healthy fats, and food high in protein.</p>
<p>One other reminder, you must also perform total body workouts. By doing this, you make your body stronger. It will help you shape muscles all over your body. If you combine this with abs-targeting workouts, you will burn fat faster than you can imagine.</p>

<p>3. Bicycles. This is one of the most basic six pack exercises. Lie back on a flat surface. Place your hand behind your ears. Bend your knees a little. Then, bring your feet up and make cycling movements in mid air. To make the exercise more exciting, touch your right elbow to your left knee as it goes up. Repeat the same step for the other side. Repeat everything from the start until all you finish all your sets.</p>
<p>4. Dancing. This routine is one of my favorites. It’s simple and you can also have fun while doing this. In fact, whenever I do this exercise I don’t even notice I am burning fat in the process. Try belly dancing or hip hop. They are very simple to do and you can perform this with your family or friends.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Any sort of exercise, even shoulder rehab exercises are the last thing on your mind when you have torn a rotator cuff. You tend to spend your time thinking up inventive ways of moving and doing everyday jobs just to avoid movement because it is so painful. There are some movements that can be impossible simply because of the pain.
</p>
<p>The problem is that when these muscles are damaged they can become inflamed and because they are all so closely linked the inflammation can cause pain. If like me, you manage to get a shoulder impingement, carrying on using your shoulder can actually cause more damage as the swollen tendons rub against the bone.
</p>
<p>So what is the answer and when is the best time to start shoulder rehab exercises.
</p>
<p>Rest, and lots of it, is the order of the day with any shoulder injury. These are fairly small but important muscles that pull the arm into the shoulder and help to prevent dislocation. They are used the most when we lift our arms above pur shoulders which is why this is often the most painful movement when they are damaged.
</p>
<p>By rest, I do mean exactly that. Steer clear of any movement that causes pain as this is likely to be an indication that you are doing more damage. You may need to change the way in which you work. I found that I needed to move my phone across the desk at work as I was answering it using my bad arm and getting pain each time. I also had to stop driving for about three weeks as I drive a vintage car with no power steering. Not good for shoulders.
</p>
<p>While you are resting the arm, you need to treat any inflammation with anti-inflammatory drugs and ice packs. Carry on with this until the inflammation and pain have gone. Stop before your arm is ready and the problem will simply come back as the inflammation returns..
</p>
<p>When the inflammation has subsided and the pain has reduced significantly you can begin gentle shoulder rehab exercises aimed at strengthening the rotator cuff. Do not start lifting weights. Use large weights and you will exercise the wrong muscles and may well damage the rotator cuff again.
</p>
<p>Shoulder rehab exercises will focus on control and flexibility, gently stretching and strengthening the muscles and building up gradually over a few weeks. They will usually be based on Pilates or Yoga as these methods of exercise use little or no weight and usually rely on your body&#8217;s natural resistance to strengthen the muscles. Done properly even quite bad rotator cuff problems can be sorted out quite quickly.
</p>
<p>And once the problem is fixed, you can use the same exercises to keep your rotator cuff strong and avoid future injuries.<br />

<p>For the more, shall we say, &#8220;leisurely&#8221; type of person, this can cause a lot of guilt. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to start walking &#8212; next week.&#8221; &#8220;How hard can it be to just walk for 30 minutes? I can do that. I just haven&#8217;t had time.&#8221; We&#8217;ve all heard (and sometimes used) one of these excuses.</p>
<p>The one reason people don&#8217;t do what they don&#8217;t absolutely have to do is simple: They don&#8217;t want to, and they don&#8217;t have to. We grow up learning that death and taxes are the only two inevitables. Now they want us to exercise?</p>
<p>Exercise is thought of by many people as a forced kind of event, and walking hovers near the top of the list in the &#8220;boring&#8221; category. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to just WALK! What&#8217;s the point, where&#8217;s the destination?&#8221; we ask.</p>
<p>Well, just like everything else, there are loopholes here aplenty; it&#8217;s up to the individual to make something so intolerably &#8220;boring&#8221; pretty interesting. It&#8217;s also imperative to your health that you rethink that statement and re-prioritize your life.</p>
<p>Just think of it this way: Do you place a high enough priority on yourself and your well-being? It never hurts to remind yourself of the health benefits you&#8217;d gain by walking regularly. It&#8217;s true &#8212; you will not notice these long-term benefits right away, you will notice these things: You&#8217;ll have more energy. You&#8217;ll sleep better. You&#8217;ll be fitter. And you&#8217;ll be happier.</p>
<p>Still not enough? OK. On those days you really can&#8217;t seem to set aside a half hour for a walk, you CAN walk. Find shorter segments of time where walking naturally fits into your schedule. If you&#8217;re used to driving everywhere, this may take a little rethinking. But consider this: If you have a short errand to do, a meeting to attend, or a child to pick up, walk. If you&#8217;re headed to see a movie, to worship, to a game, walk. Although it may take a few minutes longer than normal, remind yourself of your efficient use of time: you&#8217;re actually accomplishing several things at once. (This is a mental trick, but it works.)</p>
<p>Look, if our ancestors survived the Ice Age, it won&#8217;t kill you to walk in the rain. In our age of climate control and central air, we like our environment to remain comfortable at all times. But, come on, how &#8220;boring&#8221; is that?</p>
<p>Another trick is to think of walking as a basic human need, like sleep, shelter, and food. Then, after you complete your 30 minutes, reward yourself with any of the other three needs. Walk back home and go in the kitchen.</p>
<p>The key is to never demand too much from yourself. So what if the dishes aren&#8217;t done? Do them later. You&#8217;ll live longer and more healthfully if you walk instead of do the dishes! And doctors don&#8217;t prescribe doing the laundry a certain amount of times during the week. These are the &#8220;blocks&#8221; you put in front of yourself that keep you from walking.</p>
<p>It certainly isn&#8217;t easy to change our priorities in today&#8217;s hectic world, but it&#8217;s harder to begin &#8220;getting healthy&#8221; when it&#8217;s a little too late &#8212; and the house is spotless.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had the bad luck to get a rotator cuff tear towards the end of last year which really focused me on this group of muscles and not only how to fix them but also how to go about keeping them healthy. Some of what I found out quite surprised me and if I had known then what I now know about rotator cuff injury exercise I would definitely have gone about things differently.
</p>
<p>So read along and hopefully you can learn from my mistakes.
</p>
<p>If you have managed to damage your rotator cuff the first step on the road to health is stop using it. No, don&#8217;t put your arm in a sling but do avoid any movement that gives you pain. I know that is easier said than done. We use our arms constantly, we swing our arms when we walk or run. If you drop something, you instinctively reach out to catch it. We use our hands and consequently our arms to communicate. Resting our arms goes against our nature.
</p>
<p>However, if you do not stop using your damaged shoulder, if you carry on doing the movements that cause you pain you will simply end up damaging your arm further. Trust me, I did it! You must change how you move and work for two or three weeks to allow the muscle to heal properly. This is because the rotator cuff can get pinched or impinged when it is inflamed. That impingement causes the tendons to fray and if you ignore it they will eventually snap which is extremely bad news.
</p>
<p>So, while you are taking it easy, take anti-inflammatory drugs and use ice packs to bring down the inflammation.
</p>
<p>I made the mistake of carrying on as normal with a rotator cuff injury and made it a lot worse. I had tries anti-inflammatory drugs but only half heartedly. It was only when I finally decided to rest my arm completely and maxed out on anti-inflammatories for about three weeks that I saw any improvement.
</p>
<p>Do not play at treating the injury. Look after your shoulder properly. If you are following a doctor&#8217;s advice, follow it completely, don&#8217;t kid yourself.
</p>
<p>Once you have managed to get the inflammation and pain calmed doen do not go straight back to using your shoulder exactly as pre-injury. You need to build up the rotator cuff and shoulder. This does not mean pushing weights and exercising the major muscles like the trapeziums. The rotator cuff is a group of relatively small muscles that are focused on keeping ball and socket joint pulled together.
</p>
<p>We use them without thinking and any exercise to strengthen them will not involve large weights. Rotator cuff injury exercise tends to be more Pilates based exercises concentrating on flexibility and control rather than power. Get your rotator cuff up to strength and your whole shoulder will be stronger. Ignore it and you are likely to have another injury pretty soon.
</p>
<p>So. Like I said before, learn from my mistakes. Treat a rotator cuff injury seriously. Rest it properly, no matter how inconvenient it is. Treat the inflammation and soreness for a few weeks, don&#8217;t stop as soon as it stops being painful, carry on for a bit. When you are ready to start exercising begin with gentle exercises that focus on the rotator cuff. And keep doing the exercises when it is better. You do not want a second rotator cuff injury.<br />
