Green Eating For a Healthy Urban Lifestyle

November 11th, 2009

Healthy diets are considered effective to lower cholesterol. A low cholesterol diet contains extremely low or no cholesterol at all. Healthy diets are rich in fruits and vegetables, beans, whole grains, seafood, poultry and low-fat dairy products, as well as some oils, nuts, and unsaturated fats. Organic eating should be high in fibre but low in fat. Eating food high in fibre is one of the most important and useful decisions anyone can make towards healthy living.

Green eating focuses on low fat alternative foods. Fats are energy dense, meaning they contain many calories per serving. Organic eating diets are crucial to any weight loss program. People’s diets ultimately target far more than just their weight loss. They also focus on nutritional needs and organic cooking is a healthy way to meet those needs.

A healthy diet is always important, but it’s especially important if you are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding uses a lot of energy and nutrients. Good nutrition is fundamental to the maintenance of good health and well being. Good nutrition benefits almost every aspect of our health, from birth to old age. A healthy diet is essential for an athlete. It’s not the quantity of food intake, but the quality and selection of food that matters. An urban cookbook featuring healthy organic recepies is important to maintain an active lifestyle in the city.

Green eating is important for the human body to fight infection, prevent diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, to have the strength to engage in everyday activities, and to maintain a healthy weight. Food even affects appearance and feelings of well-being. A healthy diet is not difficult to follow. It is more difficult to avoid the tens of thousands of products and food items that are not healthy.

An organic eating regime is even more essential for women than men. As well as pregnancy, women have to cope with debilitating hormone irregularities which can impact adversely on both health and weight. A healthy diet is the first place to start. If you live in the city, an urban cookbook focused on organic foods can be a big help in maintaining green eating habits.

A healthy diet is useless if you aren’t consistent with it. Remember, this isn’t a temporary thing. A healthy diet is suitable for the whole family. Changing what you and your family eat may seem difficult at first; old habits can be hard to change. Green eating is balanced with a mixture of all the foods that are available. The variety satisfies all the body’s needs for carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, proteins, fats and amino acids without requiring massive doses of supplements.

Green eating is a way of eating that reduces risk for complications such as heart disease and stroke. It includes eating a wide variety of foods including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, lean meats, poultry, and fish. A healthy diet is one that is high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and sufficient but not excessive in protein. That translates to about 60 percent of your calories coming from carbohydrates, 25 percent from fat, and 15 percent from protein. A healthy diet is one that has balance, variety and healthy serving sizes.

Organic eating helps in minimizing artificial trans fats in the body and enhancing the levels of un-saturated fats. These un-saturated fats are found in vegetable oils, seeds, avocados, nuts, fish etc. A healthy diet is one that becomes a new way of eating, so the weight you do lose can stay off permanently. A recent scientific study on choosing a diet suggested that; as long as you choose a healthy and well balanced diet, the actual mix of protein, carbs, and fats is not that important. A healthy diet is important which means eating good food. Fruits and vegetables should be a larger part of your daily diet; fried food items should be reduced.

I have always been interested in the possibilities of improved health through proper diet. Living in an urban environment, healthy cooking is a challenge. I have learned so much from professional instruction. I can apply the techniques I have learned into real life situations. I found an amazing resource that you can can use to improve your life situation here at Urban Kitchen Cookbook.Article Source:http://www.articlesbase.com/health-articles/green-eating-for-a-healthy-urban-lifestyle-1445243.html

Low Carb Diets – Are They Healthy Or Dangersous?

October 22nd, 2009

Low carb diets are really big right now in the dieting world. Although they can make you lose weight very quickly they have their drawbacks and even health hazards. Some of the most popular low carb diets on the market today are the Atkins Diet, The South Beach Diet and the Sonoma Diet.

We will look into the potential problems with these diets below as they are things you need to consider before you decide to jump onto the low carb bandwagon.

1. Low carb diets will deplete the body of it’s glycogen stores (a form of body fuel).

When these glycogen stores are depleted they cause you to dehydrate. This will give you the impression that you are losing body fat, but you are really losing is the bodies essential water that will need to be replaced eventually. This is what makes the scales drop so quickly at the beginning with these types of diets.

When your glycogen levels are really low, there is less fuel available for your body to perform it’s functions, which can leave you feeling fatigued, tired and depressed for the duration of the diet. When you feel less energetic you are less likely to want to exercise or be active which limits the amount of calories you burn.

The problem with lowered glycogen levels also can lead to a loss of muscle tissue. Your muscles need glycogen for food and movement. You will naturally want to use your muscles less because you will feel that you just don’t have the energy to do anything.

This lack of muscle use will slowly cause the muscles to break down and lose their tone. Your body will also actually start to use protein from muscle tissue as fuel when there is little glucose available. This process is known as “Catabolism” and it is when the body breaks down protein in the body rather than creating it.

2. The majority of people will re-gain all of the lost weight on low carb diets.

A high percentage of people will re-gain all their weight lost regardless of the type of diet they chose, but that percentage is even higher for people on low carb diets.

This is due to mainly three things. You have lost lean muscle tissue that causes a slower metabolism overall. Muscles burn calories for fuel and so the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn during the day. If you go back to how you ate before you started dieting, you will actually put on weight much faster than you did before.

Next, as you start to consume carbs again, your body will slowly start to re-gain it’s lost fluids. Although it’s not fat tissue, it can bring the scales back to where they started before the diet leaving you frustrated.

Lastly, these types of diets are really difficult to maintain for the long-term. It would take an extreme amount of will-power to allow yourself to feel so miserable for several weeks let alone several months.

The solution for permanent weight loss is to not only consume enough carbs with each meal but to also consume the right kinds of carbs to preserve your lean muscle tissue and speed up your metabolism. We recommend using the new fail-proof diet from The Weight Loss Grail. Singapore Personal Trainer explains healthy breaks from a heathy diet

October 11th, 2009

As a personal trainer and fitness bootcamp instructor in Singapore, very often I meet people who love their cookies. Even while being absolutely committed to healthy diets designed for weight loss, fat burning and muscle building, they still long for a little dietary indulgance once in a while.

What is the best step to take, when we are sincerely, absolutely, dying for a bite of sweet, warm cookie?

The answer simple: Just bake your own! That’s the BEST way to eat your cookies while on a healthy diet.

Making your own luxurious, sugary pastries and confectionaries beats buyin them by far. Why?

1. VALUE – when you bake your own, you get more joy per calorie, because the fun of making them, especially if you are making them with your friends or family, the good smells that drift out of the hot oven, the feeling of warmth that comes from sharing handmade goodies, become part of your cookie experience. You don’t get to experience all these things when you just pick up pre-made or packaged cookies.

2. QUALITY CONTROL – when you eat home-baked cookies, you eat only cookie and nothing else. When you buy stuff in packages, your cookie, biscuits etc has stabilizers, preservatives, artficial flavors, bulking agents etc added to it, to give it a longer shelf life and to help the producers save on costs. Granted your ingredients (unless you raise and mill your own flour, harvest and roast your own cocoa beans etc) will have gone through a fair amount of chemical treatment, it would still overall have less added junk than commercial versions. Furthermore, you know for sure that your goodies are made from the best ingredients e.g: real rich, yellow butter, rather than the cheap trans-fat filled butter substitutes commercial bakeries use.

3. ABSOLUTE FRESHNESS – you can pop them right into your mouth the moment they’re done (and cooled off!). Nothing gets fresher than that.

4. INCONVENIENCE – It takes work and time to make your own cakes and pastries, more than just picking them up at the store would, so if you only eat those you make on your own, ten-to-one, you’ll be eating these far less often.

5. AWARENESS – when you make your own cookies or muffins, you see what goes into them. Half a cup of butter. A cup of sugar. 2 cups of white flour. This makes you more aware of the depth of badness baked goods have. This helps us to say “No” to baked goods full of refined sugar, more cleanly, more often.

6. CALORIE CONTROL – I’m NOT an advocator of counting calories, but when it comes to baked goods, you can play around with ingredients to cut the calorie count, e.g. less sugar, some applesauce in place of fats etc. This is tricky though, since baking is all about chemistry and your product might taste quite different (in an unpleasant way) from the “original”. For low calorie baking, it’s best to work with low-cal recipes that’s already been tried and tested by those in the know. (Having said that, in my humble opinion, if you’re indulging – assuming that you only do this once a month – then just indulge!)!)

Baked goods are awesome. If you put one to your face, it smells like heaven, and when you put one into your mouth, it tastes like heaven. Sweet, savory, nutty, chocolate-y , crunchy, chewy, soft, crispy – no matter the texture and taste, cupcakes, pies, puddings, quickbreads and the like – they are all so addictive. My personal fav is brownies with ice cream.

Bake your own – that’s the better indulgence.

Here’s a recipe for some dietary excess:

The Easy Apple Crumble:

CRUST
* 1 cup quick-cooking oats (80g)
* 1 cup all-purpose flour (125g)
* 1 cup packed brown sugar (220g)
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (2g)
* 1/2 cup butter, melted (115g)

APPLE FILLING

* 2-3 thinly sliced apples
* Tablespoon of flour
* Squeeze of lemon juice
* 1.5 g of cinnamon
* ¾ tablespoon of vanilla
* ½ cup of sugar
* 1/3 cup of water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place sliced apples in your baking pan, add rest of the filling ingredients over them and mix it up even with a big spoon. (adjust the amount of sugar and cinnamon as you please) Pour in the water.

2. Mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder and melted butter together in a big bowl. Make sure there are no big lumps and crumble this mixture evenly over the apples. You can double the amount of crust and put some underneath too.

3. Bake at 175C for 40-50 minutes, until the crust is a nice, crunchy golden brown.

For a peach-banana version, or a banana-peach version, you can use the following list of ingredients:

Banana-Peach version

* 1 medium banana, sliced
* 2/5 tin of peach
* 1g cardamom
* Squeeze of lemon juice
* Custard pudding (any brand from the supermarket will do)

Mix banana and peach and cardamom and lemon juice together. When the mix is in the baking pan, spoon the custard pudding over it. The custard pudding will become a nice, gooey custard sauce when baked.

A Winning Diet as the Best Body Detox Tip For a Healthier You

August 7th, 2009

Natural body detox removes toxic products from the different parts of the body. You might want to consider doing it, especially if you are feeling a lot of symptoms associated with declining health. In any way, if you want to cleanse your body from all the toxins that might be stored inside you, then you are better off by following some tips that are truly helpful in achieving a successful body detox.

For starters, the best body detox tip is to change your diet. Shifting from a diet filled with all those toxic materials to a healthy one is a proven detoxifying procedure. There are many healthy diets out there, which are not necessarily weight loss diets. As a matter of fact, what you should be doing is follow a diet that is well-balanced. That way, you could get the most vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed by the body in order to function at its best for good health.

A body detox plan is not something that you do upon a whim. You do not just do it at intervals, such as once a week, because you have to maintain it for a while. In case you are shooting for a change in your diet, you have to keep good nutrition all the time. This means getting all your vitamin needs from good food and from supplements if necessary and understanding the rudiments of a good diet, such as leading a healthy lifestyle and practicing moderation. Stopping once in a while will not be good, because it is like going back to zero all over again.

When selecting your food, whole foods are better choices rather than preserved or refined. This holds true for all food groups, such as dairy products, grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, poultry, and others. Pick up fresh and natural foods, preferably low fat, fiber enriched, or those that have lean proteins, and that have less salt, starch, and sugar.

When eating these foods as a part of your body detox program, smaller and more frequent meals are preferred rather than eating big in one seating. This is because such a manner of eating helps stabilize blood sugar and in making your metabolism work normally. Remember to avoid frying your food, so may have to bid goodbye to those fatty fried dishes. You might also want to keep a watch of your weight by knowing what the ideal and healthy weight is for you and achieving this at the same time.

In addition to keeping up with smaller and frequent meals, do not let yourself get hungry or skip a meal simply because you don’t want to eat or you are curbing your appetite. With regard to getting hungry, getting thirsty is also a no-no. Drink around eight glasses of water everyday to fully hydrate your body. It is also recommended to drink your low fat milk everyday, preferably a minimum of two glasses.

You now have a good diet, but don’t forget to move around. Exercise and involve yourself in worthwhile activities. Not only does this keep your body better fit, but it also promotes wellbeing.
